N8TED / N8HKN Mr. Theodore Harry Swanson, SK N8HKN/N8TED, age 67, of Shelby, passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at home. He was born October 27, 1949, in Grand Haven to Wally and Vera (Howard) Swanson. He was employed as delivery driver for United Parcel Service for 30 years, until his retirement in 2003. He married the former Janet Merten in Hart on August 8, 1999. Ted was awarded the Safe Driver Award from United Parcel Service for twenty five years of safe driving. He was also an outdoor enthusiast enjoying riding his Harley Davidson Road King, downhill and water skiing and camping. Ted was also a fan of Shelby High School Tigers and attending his niece and nephews athletic events. His hobby was Amateur Radio, having the call signs N8HKN and N8TED. Janet also was involved in Amateur Radio having the call sign KB8YNM. Ted also was passionate with helping Janet in the roofing business. He was a member of the North Ottawa Amateur Radio Club, Muskegon Area Amateur Radio Club, and the Oceana Area Ham Club and long-time supporter of the 147.380 repeater system. Ted is survived by his wife: Janet Swanson of Shelby; four daughters: Elina (Denis) Koegel of Spring Lake, MI, Anna Swanson of Ferrysburg, MI, Jessie (Quinn) Rycenga of Shelby, MI and Abby (David) Calderhead of Beaver Creek, OH and one son: Christopher Swanson of Spring Lake, MI; five grandchildren, Jack, Juliet, MacKenzie, Jace and Eleanor; Granddog, Tobey; one brother: Jeff (Karel) Swanson of Hudsonville, MI; father in law and mother in law, Herbert (Ardith) Merten of Hart. He was preceded in death by his parents. The Memorial Service for Mr. Swanson was held Saturday, May 13, 2017, at 11:00 am at King Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Hart with Rev. Michael Hubbard officiating. Interment will be in the Oceana Center Cemetery.

Mr. Leslie L. "Les" Cox, age 76, died Sunday, January 14, 2018 at the Harbor Hospice Poppen Residence. He was born on July 29, 1941 in Owosso, MI to Glen and Mildred (Hnetynka) Cox. Les worked for Napa Auto Parts for 44 years, and owned the Muskegon Automotive (Napa Store) on Laketon Ave. for 19 years. He enjoyed traveling, life, and especially spending time with his family. On September 2, 1961, he married the former Janice Tomasiewicz, and she preceded Les in death in 2004. SURVIVORS include 2 sons, Scott (Tracy) Cox of Norton Shores, and Rob Cox of Muskegon; 2 grandchildren, Aaron Cox and Kadie Cox; sister, Judy (Ivan) Cottrell of Cumming, GA; and brother, Jim Cox of Norton Shores. Les was also preceded in death by his parents, and in-laws. While not a ham radio operator, Les Cox was VERY supportive of our repeater system and worked on most of our big projects like antenna installs and tower builds. His help was greatly appreciated and local hams continue to benefit from his help every day. 73 my friend.
